This year Cebu Technological University – College of Arts and Sciences celebrated its Annual Culminating Activity with the theme “Globalizing Goals, Harmonizing hearts, Imbibing Ideas”. It was opened with a one day lecture series headed by the College Dean Dr. Edwin Pilapil. The lecture series includes the Formulation of Educational Objectives by Dr. Cecilia Elena delos Reyes, The Dean’s Four Point Agenda by Dr. Edwin Pilapil and Research Process and Packaging by Dr. Cecilio Baga. The second day of the celebration was highlighted with presentation of the PE students headed by the faculty members of the PE department. They showcased the different festivals of Cebu provinces which they called PASIGARBU Sa SUGBU by CTU. Below are the festivals featured during the presentation:
The Pastores de Naga is festival celebrated in Naga Cebu which depicts the shepherd’s retelling of Joseph and Mary’s journey to find the birthing place of Jesus according to Christian tradition. The story is told through songs and dances, in between songs, the presenters will tell the story in a poetic manner.
The second group presented the Tostado Festival of Santander. Tostado is Santander's delicacy. It is a sweet toasted biscuit, hence the name tostado or "toasted". The Tostado Festival highlights the local delicacy while also showcasing the culture of the people in Santander. Moreover, the local government uses the event as a venue for promoting the tostado industry.
The third group presented the Silmogi Festival of Borbon. The Silmogi Festival is celebrated by the people of Borbon every 20th of January. “Silmogi” is an old name of the town. The festival is in honor of its patron saint, San Sebastian, for the bountiful harvest of corn and sugar cane which are the main products of Borbon. The street dancing presentation is one of the highlights of the festival and is participated by the different barangays of the municipality.
The fourth group presented the Haladaya Festival of Daan-Bantayan. Haladaya Festival is one of the highly praised festivals in the Cebu Province for its colorful costumes, unique interpretative dance steps and its historical significance concerning the town’s glorious past. The name “haladaya” originated from Datu Daya who was the head of the first Malayan settlers in the place. He was known for his courage and valor in driving away the Moro raiders who constantly ransacked and terrorized the residents. The term “Haladaya” means “an offering to Datu Daya”. Halad means “offering” and Daya refers to the legendary chieftain Datu Daya whose courage in defeating the oppressive Moros has admired many.
The fifth group presented the Halad Inasal of Talisay. It is an annual fiesta celebration of talisay city in honor to their patron Saint Sta. Theresa de Avila. It is a showcase of lechons in various costumes and decorations.
The sixth group presented the Comparsa sa Mandawe festival of Mandaue City. It is a cultural festival hold to celebrate the history, heritage, values, character, culture, faith, hope, dreams, vision and spirit of the Mmandauehanons.
The seventh group presented the Hinatdan Festival of Ginatilan. It is a Festival of History, Arts and Culture .. A Festival of Life ... a Festival of Thanksgiving, Hope and Oneness of Ginatilanons. The word "Hinatdan" is taken from an old Cebuano root word "Hatod" meaning to send and "Hinatdan" means an act of sending something.
The 8th group presented the Utanon Festival of Dalaguete. It is a festival of Music and Dance featuring the high value crops and vegetables as a major form of trade in Dalaguete Cebu.
The ninth group presented the Ani-anihan Festival of Tabuelan. This festival is celebrated in honor of their patron saint John the baptist. It is a street dancing parade showcasing the planting and harvest phases of provincial life.
The tenth group presented the Sarok Festival of Consolacion. It is a festival which celebrates the foundation of the town of Consolacion. The festival features a street dance accompanied by the Miligoy de Cebu, a traditional song which originated in Consolacion.
The Pasigarbu sa Sugbu presentation was closed by the golden costumes of the students who presented the Hinulawan Festival of Toledo City. It is celebrated for the annual thanksgiving of the patron saint, St. John of Sahagun. Hinulawan is a contraction of two Cebuano words , HIN-from Hinaguan and ULAWAN from BULAWAN.
Indeed, students of Cebu Technological University were able to showcase the rich culture of the Cebuanos. They have also displayed their talents and their dedication to make the celebration successful.
